Envoy, a british restaurant and bar tucked away in Pottinger Hotel gets vibrant at night. All in all, good vibes Early Bird is a refreshing cocktail with a more fruity taste. Alcohol is a bit too strong for my liking, and diminishes the sweet and fruity-ness of what I’d prefer it to be, but they say, cocktails with strong alcohol is a good thing because it is then well paid for, fair enough! I deserve this - due to human weakness and avoidance of conflict , this is somehow my 4th time to Envoy, 2x for brunch, once for lunch and once for dinner.  Dinner is much of the same fried dreck,  while lunch is serviceable (their Tiffin set is miles better we ate here; and it' s still just fine), but this is a review for their particularly terrible brunch. I blame myself for being at all surprised, but i still went in with a small glimmer of hope - after all it's been around for a few years now, and HK is a famously difficult place for F&B to survive. Envoy must have improved from the last time (about a year ago) I went right? Sadly, no it has not.

Envoy is advertised as a modern take on colonial Indian-English cuisine, but ends up just being fried stuff filled with flavorless, texture-less ingredients, alongside other non-fried flavorless, texture-less stuff.

The brunch menu sounds appealing - all you can eat small bites, with an additional main course for $350. That said, 5 of the 8 non-salad dishes have deep-fried elements, and over-frying is one of the most obvious ways to mask a weak kitchen. Someone please let me know if I'm way off base and Indian food actually does have this much fried stuff, because that's not been my experience. Here's the menu:

I guess the descriptions of the dishes are a bit of a red flag aren't they - i get marketing-speak but "a rich, decadent dish that tantalizes the taste buds which leaves you coming back for more" doesn't say... anything. 

We tried everything except the Fresh Garden Salad (zzzz) and Netted Spring Rolls (which I didn't even bother ordering as they were a deep-fried mess that no one finished last time)

Why are these deep fried? if they had been roasted tandoori-style, or even just oven-baked, these might have been delicious. Instead they're overly crunchy, oily, and don't absorb any of the butter chicken sauce it's soaking in. Fail.

Of all the fried dishes we had, this is the only one they might consider keeping on the menu. Nicely golden-brown without being greasy, these arancini-alikes were pretty good. Unfortunately, we ordered them last so nobody had any interest in a deep fried, butter-cooked, cheese filled riceball, but I think fundamentally the risotto was nicely cooked, and the ricotta and spinach filling was appropriately flavourful. I like they went with a more subtle filling, instead of the easy Parma ham or Parmigiano route, but I wonder if an optional marinara/tomato-based dip would enhance the dish? Obviously marinara isn’t very British/Indian, but have you seen the rest of the menu? 

The Salads: creating a range of salads with this little flavor or life is an accomplishment all on its own - though not one i wanted to experience

Devoid of any taste whatsoever - i love wood ear for its crunch, but it needs SOME help. I actually ordered this 2x because i wanted some vegetables, and because i was wondering if if they'd just messed up the first one. Sadly, it was about the same: the dressing is essentially lemon-scented water, so i hope you like the taste of shredded carrot shreds, cucumber and unflavored wood ear. Hopeless

If you can believe it, this is even less interesting to taste than to look at. The best way to describe the octopus is that it tastes like a topping on a piece of supermarket sushi that's been left overnight and reheated the next day. Rubbery, so "lightly-torched" that I can't imagine it's ever actually seen a flame, and surrounded by a flaccid, miserable salad. Might be the worst thing we had.

Either an indictment of the rest of the food, or a triumph of flavor over looks, I think this was actually one of the best dishes they served. Rich vegetable flavors in a curry-lite sauce with an interesting texture (thanks to water chestnut!) made for a nice topping on the included toast slices (which were over-buttered). Though no one else at the table finished theirs, i enjoyed it.

Way too much truffle oil and butter - I get that at a 350$ brunch you're not going to get real truffles, but they overcompensated, and it's really oily.  Also, the spaghetti was weirdly short (almost as if some strands were broken in half before cooking),  which made it hard to twirl on a fork. No one came close to finishing their plate of this

As you can tell, I hated this brunch. Envoy's food hasn't improved in years and while they've added some new items (i think there weren't as many salads last time), none of them are actually good. If Envoy ever reads this, I'd say 
1) Congrats on surviving so long with such food
2) Reduce the number of items you offer for brunch, and work on their execution, complexity, and flavor. DON'T FRY EVERYTHING.
3) Consider actually referencing the flavor-packed Indian (or British for that matter) cuisine you're supposed to be representing: would even 1 real curry dish be too much to ask?

For everyone else though, the mess they call Envoy's Weekend Brunch has gone on long enough - please avoid.

Food was ok but the pandan cake was disappointing. At $88 it was definitely overpriced. We got two small pieces of pandan sponge cake which was dry, plus two pieces of soda crackers with some maltose in the middle. The place is more like an English pub and not a restaurant. Although the dishes are more appropriate for sharing I cannot understand why they don’t bring you knives when they serve The best dish we tried was the beef randeng cannelloni which is like spring roll stuffed with beef.

Dinosaur feels like chocolate sorbet with alcohol. Highly recommend to ladies . It's like having a dessert, but watch out. We all ordered from the Executive Lunch menu. I ordered:
- kale caesar
- steamed barramundi fillet
- warm date cake

All were delicious and portion sizes were just right - not overwhelmingly large nor too small.

The service is mixed, depending on staff. Some were great, very attentive. But another just kept getting our orders wrong. Ordered fresh mint leaf tea and got a teabag; ordered black coffee (Americano) and got a latte!

Price point is ok for mid week lunch - we each paid $360 inclusive of service charge and drinks.

沒想到會娱如此普通,畢竟是Pottinger Hotel。幸好不是吃晚餐,$300吃一個午餐已經不值。唯一印象深一點的是,服務態度友善,店員對小孩照顧周到,主動給我們BB櫈。但上菜太慢令服務扣分。

"Reminiscent of classic Colonial delights with layers and layers of heartwarming surprises for you" was what was written on the menu. It had indeed built a lot of my expectation of this dish. They were served in 4 layers of tiffin boxes like this.

However, I was really really disappointed when they took out the 4 layers and showed us. I really had expected more elaborate dishes by such a description on the menu and price...
That said, the food itself seemed good and to be made from high quality ingredients.
The salad consisted of fresh spinach and even figs! There were quite a lot of pumpkin which were quite fresh with quite some cheese on top. It was a bit too oily though.
The mains was duck which were not very tender but not too rough. The sauce was quite tasty which seemed something like red curry. There were quite some onions in the dish.
The fried vegetables were of good quality too. They were a bit spicy. There were quite some celery, carrots, eggplants and zucchinis. 
Rice was just plain rice with some coconut sauce. I didn't eat much and most was finished by my lunch partner together with the sauce of the mains.

We added $48+10% for Truffle fries. The fries were not super hot but warm. They tasted alright with indeed some truffle salt on them. They went great with ketchup and mayo!

A drink was included in the lunch set. The iced chocolate with skimmed milk was a bit too diluted. The presentation was nice though. 

A top-up of $38+10% for a dessert seemed to be quite a good deal so we couldn't miss the dessert although we had been quite full by then.

However, this warm fudge brownie was very disappointing as it was not dense enough nor warm enough. The rum creme anglaise really tasted a bit alcoholic but not too much. The crumble was ok.

This one was much better. The ice-cream was ok, which didn't taste so walnut but very maple. The waffle crisp was actually a piece of cookie. Luckily there were no bacon bits. Wouldn't it have been so weird with bacon bits on an ice-cream?

Environment was nice with reasonably nice interior decoration and a very quiet environment for a good chat. Service was ok. I would say the Colonial Tiffin Box was not worth a try but the normal set lunch seemed good enough from my observation of others' food. Maybe we should have just ordered a normal lunch set to make this visit a better dining experience.

Lastly we had Banoffee tart for dessert which tasted like heaven !!! Highly recommend this one ! It’s not too sweet despite I m personally not a banana lover , I love this dessert so much!!
Definitely will visit again!

So we had Bruch on a Sunday and were seated at the balcony - great place and great environment. So what's special about this place is.. you get to have ALL YOU CAN EAT appetiser and each person has one choice of main dish. Honestly you get quite full by only eating the appetisers. Honestly you get quite full by only eating the appetisers. The avocado tart is my fav- you can never have enough of it. But I do recommend ordering eeverything on the menu and order the ones you like again. 

As for the mannish - we tried everything on the menu and I do think the protein tastes much better than the pasta (besides you get quite full from the appetisers already so it probably is a good idea to order protein instead). 

Definitely would come again on a cool autumn day
