We had a family lunch in Isono to celebrate birthday(s). I first came across Isono at Restaruant Week website and decided to take this opportunity to taste its Spanish/Mediterranean menu.

We arrived at Isono before 1pm and it was only about 40% full. I was not suprised because of its off location and less competitive lunch menu (in terms of price). However, a quiet enviornment with modern decor is perfect for a weekday family lunch. We quickly decided to go for the signature dishes on the ala carte menu, which should be more interesting for a group of 6.

Isono’s Pata Negra Platter
We all love the 60-month Iberico Ham, which had great aroma and just melts in your mouth. It would be great to have a sip of cava to go with it.

Sautéed Mussels in White Wine & Basil
Baby mussels were silky with mild taste of white wine. There was a piece of small bread soaked with all the flavours, which is tasty but also very salty.

Spaghetti Carbonara w/ Guanciale
Al dente spaghetti with rich cheese sauce. It was pretty good until we had that tiny piece of guanciale (Italian style bacon). The guanciale itself is far too salty in any standards. We a phrase in cantonese, too salty feels the bitterness ("咸到苦"). I think it is perfect for describing this dish.

Meat Paella
We just a delcious home-made Seafood/Chicken Paella about a week ago. So I had a high expectation on this dish. The paella is so favourful, which is quite different from the common Seafood paella. I love the antichokes which balance the richness of the meat and rice are cooked to the perfect. However, the meat paella is again a bit salty (likely due to the Guanciale) and oily to our liking. I guess seafood paella would be much better for our taste buds.

Roasted Lemon Spring Chicken
This is by far the most delicious main dish that we ordered. The chicken is roasted to its perfect. I had the chicken breast, which had crispy skin and still juicy inside. Yummy!

Roasted Iberian Pork Shoulder with homemade BBQ sauce
Another great meat dish! The little piece of pork was cooked to medium-well with beautiful pinkness in the middle. It was tender and juicy with taste of mild pepper. A dip of BBQ sauce also elevated the flavour Iberian pork.

Chargrilled Baby Corn
The most beautiful baby Corn that I ever had. Great sweet flavor, freshness and little chargrilled aroma added the extra flavour. The small letdown was that it was not that hot when it was served.

Apple Tart Tatin w/ Vanilla Ice-Cream
It was good to finsih a meal with dessert(s). We picked Apple Tart Tatin because it is less commonly found in other restaurants. Other than the butter-taste thick pastry that we had for apple pie, this one comes with thin pastry container and caramelized apples on top. This is a very tasty dessert for 4 persons or more. If you are tired of tiramisu, cheescake, creme brulee, this is definitely a good alternative.

The tastes of some food in Isono are too bold, which are certainly not something that our body can afford to have frequently. I hope that the bold flavour is due to the fact that the chef just tries not to compromise the authenticity of the dishes rather than they were missing the mark.

Will I come back again? Not with my family for sure!
